Rich is a cool and unusual ribbon-style tangle from Taiwan CZT Sandy Ho who recently shared her sweet Ya tangle with us. It involves an interesting technique.
Sandy writes,
When I share Zentangle art in a workshop, I always hear a lot of fears from members that the new pen will run out of ink when we are practicing the filled technique.
I think it is very cute and very real. So I created another pattern and named it Rich.
Its creative inspiration is from the tiger’s beautiful texture. It is a combination of triangles and teardrops. Left and right short stitch drawing, the edges will appear naturally jagged. Just like an extension of the pattern – Jitterz.
I have heard a story. When you are depressed, you can watch the photos of the tiger. It helps you. Let the mind be rich by practicing the pattern. The pen manufacturers will also follow the rich (ha ha…). Let’s enjoy~
Using a lot of ink or can be a concern, but I usually turn to a larger Micron nib for those bigger fill jobs, even up to the Pigma Graphic 1. The Graphic 1 does take a bit of getting used to because the tip is much bigger and a little on the spongy side and care has to be taken to let the ink dry so you don’t smear it with your hand. Definitely not as accurate as the smaller Micron nibs.
As Sandy points out Rich – like Jitterz – involves an unusual use of the delicate strokes we create our tangles with. Another very early tangle on the site that uses the same technique is CZT® Sue Clark’s Echo. (Do I hear wheels turning out there?)
Here Sandy shares her Rich tile with yet another Pokeroot arrangement idea and a way to use elements of Rich inside other tangles.
Sandy illustrates the step-by-step instructions for drawing Rich below where she demonstrates it as a ribbon-style tangle and also how we might use it as a stand-alone element or as fragment in a grid.
As you enjoy any of the tangles on the site, please leave a comment of thanks and encouragement to show the artists you appreciate them for sharing their creativity to inspire yours. Your comment helps motivate them to continue to share!

…and now for something completely different!!! Wow, what a neat twist. I was in the middle of ‘tangling’ the day on my calendar page and used it right away. What a neat idea and tangle. I love it. Thanks Sandy and as always Linda.
How cool is this??! The ribbon tangle looks just like a tiger tail. Thanks for sharing your creativity.
Very nice!
Sandy I have to admit I wasn’t sure if this would be a tangle I would use, but after trying it I have to tell you that I absolutely LOVE it! I have been drawing it non-stop lately and even taught it in a class yesterday. The texture you create with it is so beautiful, especially after it is shaded. For me I keep seeing an animal hide. Love, love, love!! Thank you for sharing.
P.S. I teach at a health clinic and all of the students loved it too.
