To start our 2020 year off, Belgian CZT Ria Matheussen shares her Wooti tangle with us.
If you’ve been around for a while you’ll remember that Ria is always on the lookout for new tangles and Wooti is her 21st on the site. She found this image and was inspired to deconstruct it so we could draw it as a tangle.
Ria writes,
I’m so glad to have discovered a new pattern that I called Wooti. Again I have found inspiration in a picture of a wooden tile.
The difference with this tangle is that every square not only touches the other but a little piece of the first drawn square comes into the next square. Thanks to the grid lines, it is very easy and pleasant to draw.
You can draw Wooti by hand, exactly like on the picture but it is difficult to do that in the right way. I have chosen to fill a square black and fill the next one with stripes. By this way the new tangle is a bit different from the one on the picture, much easier to draw and the lines of the grid are disappearing.
When you redefine one side with a thicker stroke you can get more 3D effect.
This is Ria’s lovely Zendala featuring Wooti in a circular border including elements of the Zentangle-originals Indy-Rella and Crescent Moon together with Vano and Appease in the center.
It’s a cool grid-based tangle that’s easy to tangle. Wooti makes an effective background or can act as a ribbon woven through your tile, or as Ria has done in her Zendala, an eye-catching frame around it.
Ria illustrates the step-by-step instructions for drawing Wooti below where she includes one of many potential variations for you to explore.

Thank you very much for this compliment. Me too love drawing in the round and therefore I tried to use Wooti in a zendala. I found out that this tangle is so easy to drawn in the round and I liked the white spaces they were created. There are many ways to color and to fill them, I wish you succes.

Thank RIA. This tangle reminds me somewhat of Bilt. Slightly different of course…I will enjoy using this tangle– and I have to agree with others that your mandala is STUNNINGLY BEAUTIFUL! You are quite talented RIA! Thank you again for sharing.
Thank you very much Joan for your kind comment. I’m glad you ‘ll give Wooti a try and I hope, just as I do, you ‘ll enjoy it. This mandala was not a difficult one. When I have drawn Wooti, I saw almost immediately Vano appearing, I only had to fill in a few other tangles, found easily on this fantastic database!

Ria, I like your new tangle. It is quite easy, but still requires a bit of focusing while drawing. My first attempt actually came out quite nicely. Thanks for sharing it with us.
