Spanish tangler Tomàs Padrós is back today with another wonderful tangle he’s named Chorus.
While Chorus does require just a little more focus than the tangles we’ve had earlier this week, it is not at all difficult. You know what we say, “Anything is possible, one stroke at a time.™”
Tomàs writes,
Its name is Chorus in homage to classical Greek theater, as it recalls a group of linked masks.
There are two possible ways to draw it.
One of them puts more in evidence the concept of comedy mask and tragic mask with the mouth alternately happy or sad. But I think it’s easier to control the first other method.
Like almost all my patterns, Chorus emerged by chance playing with lines and shapes.
It consists in drawing a square grid of almond shaped shapes, like “eyes”. The “eyes” of Chorus can be drawn as almonds but also as ovals, which may be easier and looks good.
Then add some symmetrical curves that link with each pair of “eyes” forming a kind of “noses”. Their positions are alternated column by column.
In a column formed by pairs of “eyes” go all the “noses” down. In the next column the direction is inverted and the “noses are drawn upwards.” Finally, a partial almond shape is added where the “noses” seem to enter and which are like “mouths.” This is how this kind of mask dance is formed.
While he explains it well, for me Tomàs’s deconstructions are easier for my brain to follow. Tangles in the Chorus family include Jane Eileen Malone’s 8’s which is more of a dot grid than almonds, and Shoshi’s Y-Ful Power which is all about eyebrows …

Tomas’ rendition of his new pattern is simply gorgeous; mine, on the other hand, turned out looking like nuclear reactors, of all things! I’ll have to work diligently on this one to get it right; I like patterns such as this, that require strong focus to make it look good.
