How to draw MYSWING

Today’s delicate ribbon or border-style tangle MySwing comes from German CZT Simone Menzel, and this is her first on the site.

Simone introduces herself,

“I live in Dresden, Germany.

I started with tangling in January, 2015. From this time I am ‘Zentangle-addicted’.

I am working in a full time job as a Quality Manager and I do not have lots of time. Zentangle gives me the balance between a stressful job and my daily life. I am very grateful for this experience.

As the highlight of my ‘tangle life’ I was at CZT seminar 23 in April, this year. It was so exciting to meet Rick and Maria and her lovely daughters and to watch them tangling and listening to their experiences.

I would like to make Zentangle a bit more popular in my region. I am the first CZT in the part of Germany, where I live (Saxony).”

Interested to learn more about Simone’s home town of Dresden, naturally I consulted Wikipedia. I have to say that Dresden has one of the most extensive pages I’ve yet come across on Wikipedia. I usually start by enjoying the photo eye-candy on the relevant pages. Not surprisingly, Dresden’s architecture is varied and beautiful.

Among the many things to learn about the city of Dresden:

• it is the capital city and after Leipzig the second-largest city of the Free State of Saxony in Germany
• it is situated in a valley on the River Elbe, near the border with the Czech Republic
• it was known as the Jewel Box, because of its baroque and rococo city centre
• Dresden University of Technology is one of the 10 largest universities in Germany
• it is often known as “Silicon Saxony”
• it is one of the most visited cities in Germany
• it has 14 twin cities (!)
• it has some 13,000 listed cultural monuments
• the general area has a population of approximately 1.1 million people
• and last but not least for sports fans, Dresden is home to the Dynamo Dresden football club, currently in the Bundesliga

As for her tangle Simone writes,

“The tangle ‘came to me’ when I started with a curvy line and connected some other swings and came into the flow….  I love the story of its origin – without any intention, just by chance…

So I decided to give it a name: I called it ‘MySwing’ because it is full of swings and came out of myself.”

MySwing gives a nice sense of undulating movement to a tile, and shading is the icing on the cake. In my first attempts at MySwing I got a little confused about the position of the “swings” on the curvy line that forms the backbone of MySwing. But once I focused on the swings coming off the tops and dipping into the bottom of the waves, it was easier to keep going. And of course turning the tile to get things headed in the right direction makes a big different too.
