How to draw PARAVAN

I don’t know about you but for me it’s hard to believe we’re just a week away from the first day of summer.

Before long the 2016 edition of the Tour de France kicks off (July 2nd – July 24th) and until then Robert and I are immersed in UEFA Euro 2016 (June 10th – July 10th).

As our European tangling friends will know this is the European football/soccer tournament held once every four years to determine the champion out of 24 countries in Europe that qualified for the tournament. At three matches a day for the next week or two, thank goodness for a DVR. These events provide loads of great tangling time for me!

Paravan is a new tangle from Belgian CZT Ria Matheussen and it’s her first on the site. Ria became a CZT recently at the 22nd seminar in April.

Ria explains her inspiration for Paravan and tells us a little about her background.

On our search for a screen in the greenhouse, I saw this beautiful model on the Internet.

Immediately I saw a very nice and simple tangle in it. It is a very easy and simple pattern but you can make so many variations on it.

The translation of screen in French is Paravent, Paravan is Flemisch dialect for screen.

I was born in the North of Belgium (Flanders), I live in the South (les Ardennes) and I organize workshops in the middle (Hasselt) and I like that.

I discovered Zentangle® on the internet during the summer of 2014. After a few workshops, I knew this magic drawing art would always be a part of my life. I’ve never stopped drawing: on sunny days, but also in bad times. I loved Zentangle at first sight, and that will never change.

I began my example of Paravan by drawing a column of alternating rice shapes and diamonds for Step 1. But after I was finished I wondered if Ria drew it as a pair of scalloped strokes intersecting each other. I tried that and didn’t have as much control as the rice-and-diamonds version but others will very likely find that a simpler way to get the same result.

And as I often do, I turned the example sideways because there is no up or down in Zentangle!

Ria illustrates the step-by-step instructions for drawing Paravan below and shows several different variations of her tangle to try.
