How to draw BRRRST

Zentangle pattern: BrrrSt. Image © Linda Farmer and TanglePatterns.comBrrrSt is a pretty grid-based tangle pattern from New York CZT Kelly Barone, and it’s her first on the site. Kelly was a member of CZT 17 and she lives and teaches in Kenmore, NYbetween Buffalo and Niagara Falls.”

She writes that BrrrSt was inspired by a church window,

I was in the car at the time and it was on the corner of a street that started with Br… that was all I saw. I think it was Bryant but I don’t really know… I was paying attention to the pattern. But that’s how it got it’s name. BrrrSt

BrrrSt is easy and fun to draw and it does look a little like its bursting forth. A little shading adds some dimension that visually makes the center parts come forward and gives a layered look to this tangle.

Kelly illustrates the step-by-step instructions for drawing BrrrSt here on her blog. Remember to click on the image to get the larger version for downloading.

What an luscious quick pattern that I loved, just for the sheer joy of working on it. When I saw the message I wondered what Brrrst was going to look like, then read the story behind it. Love it Kelly.

Does anyone else see the owl??? Love it…great pattern!

  • Trish Paquette

Yes, I do, Bunny!! That’s so cool!!

  • Jennifer Hohensteiner

    This is beautiful.

Kelly. Thank you for BRRRST! Love it. Already practiced it on a scrap of paper. Bunny–after a minute I do see owls! Cool! It is funny how our brains do that. Now every time I glance at my paper I see owls.
Thank you Linda. I appreciate you. And thank you to Kelly for a fun new tangle to draw this afternoon. Nancy

I was talking with a friend while filling the places and ended up with the rounded lines where the star bursts belong. So it was all circles broken by the angled auras. I like this variation also. Thank you Kelly. Tangling is at it’s best when the unexpected shows up on its own.
