How to draw WIFFLES

Zentangle pattern: Wiffles. Image © Linda Farmer and TanglePatterns.comToday’s easy tangle Wiffles is from Canadian tangler Judy Murphy. She has several tangle patterns on the site, her most recent was Jumu.

Wiffles “appeared” while Judy was engrossed in a telephone conversation.

In spite of its evident simplicity, Wiffles truly is a lot of fun to draw! Trust me here, this one will really grow on you. There are so many ways to embellish Wiffles and change up its configuration. For my example I added a little drop shadow to give it a bit of pop.

Judy illustrates the step-by-step instructions for drawing Wiffles below and shows several ways to vary it, including one in the very bottom left corner that’s easily missed. Enjoy!

Tangle or Zentangle?

Often Zentangle newbies describe their drawings containing several patterns as "a tangle". Or conversely, refer to a tangle as "a Zentangle". Not so.

A tangle is one (1) single pattern. And there are guidelines about what qualifies as a tangle. For details visit ZENTANGLES > A PATTERN IS NOT ALWAYS A TANGLE on the top menu bar of any page.

A Zentangle is the finished art on a tile containing one or more tangles. A Zentangle containing just one tangle is called a monotangle.

And while we're on the subject of using this wonderful art form's terminology correctly, as for "Zentangling" or "Zentangled" the terms to use are tangling or tangled. 🙂

As described on zentangle.com, "In its verb form 'tangle' means to draw a tangle. You tangle a tangle, and in that process create Zentangle art."

Learn more by visiting the ZENTANGLES > ZENTANGLE TERMINOLOGY page on the top menu bar of any page.

Looks like the symbol for a Transformer on the top and that of a Resistor on the bottom in an electrical circuit!

  • Melena

Yes Dave! They sure do. I was thinking these patterns looked a little electrical but couldn’t put my finger on it. 😀

Thanks Judy! This one looks really fun to do. Haven’t had a chance to try it yet though.

  • Noelene

This is an interesting one, Dave thought of electrical things. I thought of stitches in my sewing book. Looking forward to trying it out.

  • Susie Achter

Couldn’t believe how much fun and how addictive this one is. Thank you!
