How to draw AQUAFLEUR

Zentangle pattern: Aquafleur. Image © Linda Farmer and TanglePatterns.com. ALL RIGHTS RESERVED. You may use this image for your personal non-commercial reference only. The unauthorized pinning, reproduction or distribution of this copyrighted work is illegal.First demonstrated at the CZT XII training in October 2013, the instructions for the lovely new Zentangle®-original tangle Aquafleur have just been publicly released by co-founders Rick Roberts and Maria Thomas.

This tangle, Maria writes, was created on a 3-day mini-vacation she and Rick enjoyed in Bermuda last summer. Maria read and drew, and created this tangle pattern. “I wanted to have movement, like the waves. Drama, like the sunsets. Shapes like the flora. And passion . . .” The beautiful result is Aquafleur.

When you see Maria’s illustrated instructions here, it appears Aquafleur takes more than the usual number of steps for a tangle but it is not at all complicated. Just thoroughly illustrated. And, no surprise, it is so much fun to play with! Rick and Maria share some tips for exploring Aquafleur even further.

This is a dynamic tangle to aura. Play with integrating other tangles between the ‘petals’ … Try different shapes and sizes for the foundation shape. Most of all . . . have fun.

Here to inspire you is one of Maria’s Zentangles featuring Aquafleur.

And though the 2013 Christmas season is now history, you simply can’t miss CZT Carole Ohl’s Christmas card featuring Aquafleur. It’s spectacular!

    Hi,
I just had a look at the Christmas tree by Carole Ohl.. can I ask what colour pens are being used to add any colour to a tangle?

Tree looks absolutely amazing as do all the other varieties of the Aquafleur and of course the original as well….

    Cheers

I found Zentangle while I was browsing Amazon for art related books, and I ordered the Kindle edition for A Zentangle a Day right away, and started with that. Then I trawled the Internet for more. I don’t remember how I stumbled upon Carole Ohl’s gorgeous Christmas Tree. I learned it was done with the Aquafleur tangle. I looked all over the Internet for that tangle’s steps, with no luck. Then I got Linda’s “Tangle Guide ” and found it was an official tangle, and not published on the web! Arrrrggghhh! So I signed up for the Zentangle e-newsletter and for a subscription to this site.

So, imagine my delight when I discovered that Aquafluer was in the Zentangle newsletter. I couldn’t get my iPad and WiFi to move fast enough! You had it up soon after. Now, I am wondering how long I need to practice it before I may be as dazzling with it as Carole Ohl! (Love her blog.) I am still practicing Mooka, for a few weeks, to get the gorgeous forms the Maria and Rick have demonstrated. Yes, I addicted and determined.

BTW, Zentangle is helping me cope with my bouts of depression. Zentangle has been more effective, for me, than cognitive therapy.

I’m new to Zentangle and I can’t wait to give aquafleur a try…

I have been playing around with this pattern and think it is beautiful. Before I began Zentangle, I did not pay attention to patterns that are in almost everything. Now, I see patterns in nature, carpet, furniture, in the background of television programs, material and the list is endless. I think it would be nice if it were taught from Kindergarden through High School!

Thank you Maria for sharing your patterns and your time!
