Chrissie Frampton is from the UK and Cayla is a tangle pattern she named after one of her granddaughters.
Somewhat reminiscent of the official Keeko tangle, Cayla is so easy to draw. It’s completed with two simple strokes, repeated, and the whole pattern is wrapped up in two steps. Poifect.
“My story is very similar to Sharon Robinson who did the pattern Sindoo. I live on the south coast of England not too far from Bournemouth having moved from nearby Southampton after retiring three years ago. Since retiring we started to follow our passion of travel and it was on a long cruise that I started watercolour lessons given onboard. When home again, I searched for watercolour books on Amazon and the usual recommendation of books came daily by email. In the middle of one email was a recommendation for a Zentangle® book which I knew nothing about so I started to look on the Internet and I was fascinated and haven’t stopped since! That was in May 2012 and I am addicted… The watercolours took a back seat and the tangling a front seat!!”
Chrissie illustrates the step-by-step instructions for drawing Cayla below and in her Zentangle shows interesting ways to vary it with different shading and by adding a pattern in one of the “bands”. I love her example in the lower right using reversed vanishing points. Cool!

Thank you Chrissie, I had seen this pattern in Tangle’s and thought it looked far to complicated for me. You made it easy and fun! I love the variations that you used! Very pretty. I will try this in a Tangle.
Hi Linda and Chrissie. Thank you mentioning me and my tangle! It’s great to know that there are few of us Brits tangling away. I would love to get a little group together in Southampton if there are enough of us. I look forward to trying out Cayla.
I like it. It’s a nice substitute for Keeko and Bamboo. I’ll be using them all.
I am delighted that my pattern has made it to TanglePatterns.com (Thanks Linda for choosing to include it) and wouldn’t it also be great if we had a CZT in the south of the UK, but we do not seem to have many CZT’s our side of the Atlantic. But, failing that, it would be great to get a group together Sharon, I would love that, we now live in Verwood near Ringwood about 20 miles from Southampton. I would also like to see other tangler’s artwork pieces with Cayla in them. 😉
Love the variations.
Just recently got acquainted with Zentangles and what a relaxer. As a child and in highschool, I spent hours doodling, and the teachers were not happy with it. But while I was doing it I was absorbing each and everyword she said. I was an honor student so that should tell you something. I think it actually made me concentrate better and relieved my mind of all the other millions of thoughts I had. I am happy to see I can get it back in my life and actually have a grand time with it. Thank everyone who is doing this and promoting.
I drew Cayla..and I loved it. I did a ZIA with cayla and made them into bamboo..and put a panda bear in the middle. I made a couple of mistakes, so I will try again. Thanks again..I have always doodled–so Zentangle fits nright in and also has helped my painting…
Oh thank you Mary. I would love to see it. 😉
