How to draw ILANA

Zentangle pattern: Ilana. Image © Linda Farmer and TanglePatterns.com. ALL RIGHTS RESERVED. You may use this image for your personal non-commercial reference only. The unauthorized pinning, reproduction or distribution of this copyrighted work is illegal. It’s been some time since we had a tangle pattern from Mariët Lustenhouwer, but today we have two. Mariët recently posted Ilana and Ciceron together and they’re both worth adding to the index. Ilana is the first of the two new patterns.

Ilana is an easy grid-based tangle that at first glance doesn’t look like it started with one.

My first example is the double and I drew it with a brand new 01 Sakura Micron pen after I’d inadvertently left the cap off my old one overnight. The single Ilana example on the right is from the old pen. Looks like it was time to say goodbye anyway.

Mariët illustrates the steps to Ilana here on her blog.

Oh! How cool is that?! And they go so well together, too.

  • Jennifer Hohensteiner

What is so fascinating about the double Ilana is that the small squares disappear and larger ones appear, made up of rays, seemingly without any support from an underlying grid. Very cool.

    Thats very nice!

Hi, Linda! In your example of Ilana, how DID you make the grid lines disappear? Did you draw your grid with a pencil and then erase it after you filled the squares? In Mariët’s instructions we can actually see the guidelines. I really like both looks. Thanks! Robin

Hi Robin, the grid was done with ink; pencil guidelines or grids are never used for Zentangle®. You can see the inked grid is there if you look closely, it comes out of the center of each motif. 🙂

Oh Wow! I just found this on Tangle Refresher 85 (From Tangle Refresher 113 – 😀 )

Beautiful I love this one and how the original grid just disappears. Thank you Mariët.
