I was looking around for a simple, uncomplicated tangle pattern for us today and happily Susan Goetter came to my rescue with Fanz, so-named “because the shapes look like little fans“.
Susan writes, “I’ve found that this is a great ‘fill’ tangle and it’s also very simple to master!”
While Fanz is a very basic pattern, you can use it to fill just about any shape and it can be varied with pretty unlimited decorative elements inside each fan.
Susan uses a bold line variation in her first example and points out that “using it that way, it resembles a pine cone.” For my example I added strokes to make even it more fan-like. While Fanz is not a complicated tangle, you do have to concentrate on your spacing for a pleasing outcome.

You do such a great job on this sight. Thank you. I am new to Zentangle but am ordering your 2011 pattern book right now. Have you thought about issuing updates yearly? I think it would be great to be able to keep our patterns current and it might add a bit of revenue for your valuable and most appreciated efforts.
