How to draw CUBIC

Recently Karl Stewart shared his tangle Girdy with us. Today he’s back with Cubic, where Karl applies order to the random nature of the official tangle Hollibaugh with a little weaving added in.

His inspiration? “I was looking at the weave on the partitions in my cubicle at work when inspiration struck.”

Cubic uses the Zentangle® practice of “drawing behind” and also relies on turning your tile as you go so you can keep track of where to place your next strokes. It’s unusual in that you start from the outside of the section you’re filling and work towards the middle. Karl points out that you can fill any shape with this tangle pattern, it doesn’t have to be square.

Cubic is very versatile, the ways you can alter it with fills in the spaces are many – and it requires focus so you don’t end up filling in the woven strips of the tangle instead. I think you’ll have fun with this one!

In step 2 below, turn the tile 90° clockwise from Step 1 and draw the next band across the bottom, then turn 90° and draw the next band (the one appearing across the top in this step), then turn again and draw the final band. Then just keep adding bands to the inside as you turn the tile.
