Marizaan van Beek, a colleague from my CZT#7 class last October, is from Pretoria, South Africa, one of two CZTs in that country.
Her simple and lovely Angel Fish tangle pattern is her first on the site.
Marizaan writes, “Five years ago I was introduced to Zentangle® by accident looked it up and as a Social Worker and Art Therapist I knew here was something special. I was not practicing anymore but I wanted to teach Zentangle as I knew instinctively it could change people. It took me four years before I could make my trip to Providence but I am now a proud CZT. I started to teach right away and enjoy every moment of it.
I was doing Sanibelle when this just emerged. It is a mix of Sanibelle, Fescu, and Dragonair … One of my students named it Angel Fish, so Angel Fish it is.“
Dragonair is based on the official tangle Cadent, which you will no doubt discover is a veritable tangleation factory.
Angel Fish is a very easy and versatile tangle pattern – you can draw it as simply as I’ve done above or you can create an overall pattern with it as Marizaan does in her tile below. In my example on the right I linked several of them together. It grows organically by using any of the Fescu “stems” and working it outwards. Quite cool.
Marizaan illustrates the step-by-step instructions for drawing her Angel Fish tangle pattern below, accompanied by a lovely Zentangle® starring Angel Fish.
Here is Marizaan’s beautiful Zentangle featuring Sanibelle, Fescu and Angel Fish.

Hold me back!!!
This is so lovely – I just can’t wait to try it!!!
This is gorgeous. Can’t wait to add it to my tangling.
Beautiful! When I saw the name, I was afraid the tangle would be too representational, but once I saw it, I was delighted by how abstract it is. Glorious!!! Thank you for sharing it!
Amy, Amy, Amy. You should know me better than that 🙂
What a lovely pattern! And I love the name too.
Thank you!
Cheryl 🙂
very beautiful, now I have to go practice it
I love the shading hints too!
Beautiful combo tangle.
This is an amazing pattern. The possibility to grow and interlock in many different ways is fantastic. Shading as well can bring striking outcomes. Thank you for such an inspiring pattern!
Hi Marizaan, Absolutely awesome! Tried it straight away, got carried away and did a complete circle of the one angel fish and ended up with a gorgeous petunia! Can’t wait to do a piece for framing. Many thanks for such an amazing tangle and look forward to your next pattern. Cheers Peggie Australia
Very nice!!
Oooooh, this is just fabulous. Love it love it. This is going into my bag of ‘frequently used’ tricks! Thank you for sharing. What else do you have up your sleve?
I really love doing this pattern. It is one of the ones that is the most soothing. And I really appreciated the shading!
I love these. One of my fav because you can do so much w/this one design, so many variations. Thank u!
Such an easy tangle!! Love how it looks epically with shading!!
Thanks for posting!
Beautifull! I already tried it!!!! Thanx for the beautifull pattern!

Wow beautiful will have to try this thank you for sharing
I will be giving this one a try for sure.
This has always been one of my favorites. It has such an aquatic vibe. Thank you for sharing it again.
This is an elegant pattern. Beautiful and so easy. So many possibilities, thank you!
This is one of the most eye catching design. Beautiful
I have recently started tangling and this is my favorite tangle so far.
This tangle is beautiful. I am still learning but I think these basic strokes produce a beautiful sight. The shading is great and really brings these angel fish to life. The shading is exceptional. This is going into my little red moleskin book into a Zentangle this week. Thank you for sharing! Nancy
I love this tangle and all tangles with this particular wave in them. However, for some reason I have the most trouble with learning how to draw this particular pattern. I will just keep trying. I too have already sent my contribution and can’t wait to see the new book. Does anyone have a suggestion for a rolling bag to carry around the house or where ever I might go. I have lupus and several other autoimmune diseases and have, in a very short time, collected a great deal of different pens, pencils and paper that for some reason I feel I must have at my side at all times. Tangeling has become one great source of peace in my life. I have 5 kids and in 13 months ending in Feb. 2014 I will have 4 brand new grand-baby boys, and will be moving for the 9th time in 23 years for mu husband’s job. We know we are moving but the decision to where has not been made yet. If it wasn’t for the world of Zentangle I would have lost my mind by now. When it gets to be to much I pull out my paper and pens and fill up a card.
absolutely beautiful tangle. haven’t had chance to do much over the summer but now darker nights I will do a lot more
thank you for this design. has started me off again
I like this pattern very much and I use it a lot, thank you
