How to draw REI

It’s Friday! And it’s the Victoria Day long weekend for all our Canadian friends and rellies.

Always a good feeling to arrive at the first long weekend of the nearly-Summer season when grills are dusted off and gardens begun. Of course here in the USA we have our long Memorial Day weekend coming up next.

For your tangling pleasure today we’re exploring Italian CZT Laura Rossi Doria’s Rei tangle, as she notes is “pronounced like the English word ‘ray’.” Laura is from Torino (Turin) and Rei is her first tangle on the site.

Turin is an ancient city in northern Italy with a population of over 2 million people. Wikipedia tells us:

The city has a rich culture and history, and it is known for its numerous art galleries, restaurants, churches, palaces, opera houses, piazzas, parks, gardens, theatres, libraries, museums and other venues. Turin is well known for its Baroque, Rococo, Neoclassical, and Art Nouveau architecture. Many of Turin’s public squares, castles, gardens, and elegant palazzi, such as the Palazzo Madama, were built between the 16th and 18th centuries.

The city also hosts some of Italy’s best universities, colleges, academies, lycea, and gymnasia, such as the University of Turin, founded in the 15th century, and the Turin Polytechnic. Turin is also worldwide famous for icons like the gianduja, the Shroud of Turin, the automobile brand Fiat, and the association football club Juventus.

Turin is home to much of the Italian automotive industry, hosting the headquarters of Fiat, Lancia, and Alfa Romeo. …

Before we get to Laura’s steps for tangling Rei let’s learn a little more about her.

I studied Architecture and there I learned to love technical drawing and its precision, modularity, but also the exceptions, peculiarities that make an object unique.

In Zentangle® I rediscovered everything and even more… I understood that you can draw even without having a project in mind, I understood that creativity is within each of us and you just have to let it free to express itself. And above all, I found out that when I draw, I feel good, I relax and have fun.

Laura introduces Rei,

I see patterns everywhere, as many of us do. A couple of days ago, I thought it was time to clean out the garage and throw away the things that no longer work. I collected everything and went to the dump. Among the junk were some broken roof tiles, which I threw into the right dumpster. Inside it I noticed a bunch of dishes with this interesting design.

This tangle is quite simple and can be varied in many ways.

It’s been a little while since we tackled an ogee grid tangle but Rei joins a whole bunch of them if you feel like exploring more of this genre.

Laura illustrates the step-by-step instructions for drawing Rei below where she also shows a couple of different ways to embellish her tangle.
