How to draw JALOUSIE

Jalousie is a tangle pattern created by Stephanie Kukla of Hamburg, Germany, and this is Stephanie’s first tangle on TanglePatterns.

“While I was looking for some new furniture I saw a wrought- iron mirror in a store. The frame looked like a drawing … It reminded me of a window shade with its cord and little ball to pull it down so I called it JALOUSIE (the French word for Venetian blind).”

One of the things I like about Stephanie’s tangle pattern in addition to its flexibility for variation, is that it’s a little different from what we generally see as a grid of squares, stretching it into rectangles and opening up some interesting design possibilities.

When asked to tell us how she became interested in Zentangle®, Stephanie writes:

“It was in September 2010 that I clicked a link on James Ricklef’s Tarot Blog which looked quiet interesting to me – it was named ‘Zentangle Blog’. ZEN was the clue to arouse my interest as I associated the idea of meditation, relaxing, getting focused.

And what I found there on the Zentangle Blog was so intriguing! Lots of tiles to admire, patterns to explore, and so many additional links to other fascinating blogs of tanglers all over the world. I spent several nights just browsing the Zentangle-universe, looking and marveling at this art form.

I had to try tangling myself immediately… I’ve been interested in art ever since I can remember and abstract art has been my favorite style.

I’ve been tinkering, doing handicrafts and drawing my whole life. But the COMBINATION of drawing and meditation was exactly that missing link I was looking for even without being aware of it!

I direct my attention to the ZEN-feeling during the process of tangling and the contemplation that follows afterwards. Being a tarotist with abandon I found a new way to create my personal ‘card of the day’ by tangling them. How thrilling is that???“
