How to draw FUNNYVALENTINE

Yay, it’s Friday!!

Not only that, today is my sweetheart Robert’s birthday 🙂

Hello again friends! I’ve been saving CZT Beatrice Aronas’s FunnyValentine tangle for this special occasion.

It fits with the “compassion, sincerity, kindness, generosity, and other great qualities”  Beatrice writes about:

I just read your message that we can submit the heart tangles all year round. After all, the heart is not only a symbol of Valentine’s Day, and love but also of compassion, sincerity, kindness, generosity, and other great qualities.

This tangle, along with two more appeared in my sketchbook quite recently, while I was participating in the Valentangle23 project. Ten dynamic days with thousands of hearts and two beautiful Zoom classes made these pre-Valentine days festive. An amazing group of people was sharing their talents and inspiration. Great event by all means.

And suddenly this tangle appeared.

Appeared, and obsessively remained asking for attention. For a few days I tried to insert it into my daily practice and it happily found its place among other tangles. I showed it to my friend, and she liked it and created something very beautiful with it. So I also drew a few tiles using this tangle and enjoyed these whimsical and funny hearts dancing together in border lines or as a centerpiece.

And the name, too, came while I was getting ready for the submission of this tangle. While I was playing with variations of this tangle around Valentine’s Day this cool jazz station was playing a lot of beautiful music and among them, there was the gentle, seductive voice of Chet Baker singing the song “My Funny Valentine”. So beautiful! The song created and recorded long ago before some of us were even born!

Yes, let it be a FunnyValentine tangle!

One of the many things Robert and I enjoy together has always been music. Such were our priorities that our first joint purchase some 50+ years ago was a pair of enormous Celestion Ditton Monitor speakers still in use today and many is the evening we’ve sipped a glass of vino listening to some prize from our jazz collection. Including one of our favorites, the “sublimely lyrical trumpeter”, Chet Baker: “the prince of cool  … James Dean, Sinatra and Bix (Beiderbecke) rolled into one”.

Some of the lyrics of Funny Valentine, the 1937 Rodgers and Hart song, definitely don’t apply to Robert because he has always been photogenic, a beautiful smile every time. And it’s true, “you make me smile with my heart,” Sweetheart!
