How to draw GOSPEL

For our first tangle of Spring, we’re lucky to have our second one within a couple of weeks from Spanish CZT Tomàs Padrós.

Gospel is another dot grid-based tangle that’s both easy when you take it “one stroke at a time” and eye-catching. As always with this type of tangle, shading is what really makes it pop.

Tomàs explains the origins of his Gospel tangle and its name:

It’s one of the many patterns I’ve designed from rows of triangles, like Pickpocket. In this case, I named it Gospel because I was reminded of a bunch of people lined up and holding hands, with wide sleeves, like in a Gospel choir.

In addition, this is my particular tribute to the spirituality that accompanies this form of expression. Gospel is more than music: it is a force that unites, elevates and ignites the spirit, with voices that intertwine like the outstretched hands suggested in the tangle. This collective singing resonates with emotion, hope, community and faith, transformed into harmony and melody.

And heaven knows, we all really need hope to get us through the discordant currents of chaos being stirred up around us. Gospel is a great way to get out of your head for a bit.

Tomàs illustrates the step-by-step instructions for drawing tangle below and he includes a beautiful tile featuring his tangle. Below that he shares another way to play with Gospel.
