Hi my tangling friends and welcome to the first of our August tangles.
The whimsical Tanbrella tangle is from Japanese CZT Yoko Kaga and it’s her first on the site.
Yoko is from Chiba, Japan, a prefecture of several cities and 6 million people. Always fascinated about far away places, I did a little research.
“Adjacent to Tokyo, Chiba is best known for being home to Japan’s two Disney parks, but the area overflows with natural beauty both inland and by the sea. Stretching 66 kilometers along Chiba’s coast is Kujukuri Beach, Japan’s longest stretch of sandy coastline, ideal for watersports.”
Chiba Prefecture is home to one of Japan’s largest industrial areas. Prior to World War II manufacturing in the prefecture was centered on the brewing industry, specifically the production of soy sauce, sake and mirin sweet cooking sake. The manufacturing sector expanded greatly after the war. … Chiba Prefecture is now 6th in Japan in industrial output with the bulk of the industry focused on the petroleum, chemical, and steel and machine industries. ~ Wikipedia
Yoko shares how she discovered Zentangle® and introduces her tangle:
In 2015, I came across a book by Zentangle while looking for a gift for my niece. I thought it would be interesting, so I bought it for my niece and myself.
Zentangle reminded me of the joy of drawing, and I wanted to convey that joy to the people around me.
Tanbrella was made for the rainy season in Japan. I thought that anyone could draw it with a simple curve.
I would be happy if you could freely connect the umbrella-like Tanbrella and enjoy it.
Yoko illustrates the step-by-step instructions for drawing Tanbrella below and she features it in a simple monotangle showing some fun ways you can enjoy embellishing it.
As you enjoy any of the tangles on the site, please leave a comment of thanks and encouragement to show the artists you appreciate them for sharing their creativity to inspire yours. Your thanks helps motivate them to continue to share! And please share a link to your favorite tangles on social media. Thanks!

- "A Zentangle has no up or down and is not a picture of something, so you have no worries about whether you can draw a hand, or a duck. You always succeed in creating a Zentangle." Thus patterns that are drawings of a recognizable naturalistic or actual object, figure, or scene, are not tangles. A pattern is not always a tangle — here's what makes a tangle.
