Today is Australia Day for all our tangling friends down under, so we wish everyone there a happy summer holiday — as we northerners cope with our winter chills 🙂
“Australia Day is the official national day of Australia. Celebrated annually on 26 January, it marks the anniversary of the 1788 arrival of the First Fleet of British Ships at Port Jackson, New South Wales, and raising of the Flag of Great Britain at that site by Governor Arthur Phillip. In contemporary Australia, celebrations reflect the diverse society and landscape of the nation, and are marked by community and family events, reflections on Australian history, official community awards, and citizenship ceremonies welcoming new immigrants into the Australian community.” – Wikipedia
I included a little bit about Australia Day when posting the tangle Arcodos a few years ago and when I revisited it, I was delightfully reminded of these little treasures:
When I was doing a little research on the traditions of celebrating this fine summer holiday I learned about some yummy-sounding Australian foods I’d never heard of before like snags and dampers and Lamingtons and friands. And though I’ve heard of Pavlovas, the Aussies have a whole encyclopedia of ways with Pavlovas.
Happy Australia Day celebrations to all our Aussie tangling friends! Enjoy your picnics and barbies or a day at the beach with family and friends, and an evening of fireworks to top it all off. And pass the Lamingtons, pretty please.
And welcome to our midweek tangle, Heart Ribbon.
This one’s a sister tangle to CZT Barbara Duel Johnson’s Heart Twig from earlier in the week.
Both start off the same way with pairs of mirrored hearts along a center line, then Heart Ribbon undergoes an Arukas or Betweed-like treatment of alternating auras that create a woven effect.
Just wondering, since peppering is also now our term for that technique could this be called betweeding? (Just ‘cuz arukasing doesn’t flow off the tongue so well though it might be closer to the concept.)
In any case, another sweet, easy and fun heart tangle for us to explore. I used one of Barbara’s variations as the basis for my Heart Ribbon example.
Barbara illustrates the step-by-step instructions for drawing Heart Ribbon below. She also includes suggestions for varying her tangle with different embellishments. It never fails to amaze me how many simple additions can be made to change a tangle.
As you enjoy any of the tangles on the site, please leave a comment of thanks and encouragement to show the artists you appreciate them for sharing their creativity to inspire yours. Your thanks helps motivate them to continue to share! And please share a link to your favorite tangles on social media. Thanks!

Share your tangle on TanglePatterns
Everyone is invited to share patterns on TanglePatterns.com, you do NOT need to be a CZT. In order for patterns to be considered for publication they must be submitted to me by email. In other words you have to let me know about them.
For a submission to qualify as a tangle it must be a genuine pattern (“a repeated decorative design”) and not “a thing to draw”.
From The Book of Zentangle:
“Keep it Non-representational. Zentangle artwork is intended to be non-representational. Zentangle’s elemental strokes are also non-representational.
We don’t teach complex elements such as hearts, stars or flowers. Tangles are also non-representational.”
Remember that tangles never start with pencil planning.
"A tangle has no pre-planning with pencil guidelines, grids or dots, no erased lines."
If you need a refresher on what makes a tangle, read the A PATTERN IS NOT ALWAYS A TANGLE page on the ZENTANGLES menu bar at the top of any page.
For details on how to submit your pattern for consideration visit the SUBMIT YOUR PATTERN page on the top menu bar of any page on the site. On that menu you will find these two pages:
The first page includes instructions on how to prepare and send your JPGs. (Please save me time and do not send PDFs). It also includes a link to this PDF submission form.
When your examples include additional tangles from the site, please list them in your email. (This saves me time and my memory some wear and tear.)
If your pattern is posted on your blog, attach your steps and tile JPGs to your email and be sure your email includes the direct URL so I can link to it.
And remember, to quote Zentangle's co-founders Rick and Maria: tangles should be "magical, simple and easy to create", non-objective patterns of repetitive strokes that are easy to teach and offer a high degree of success to tanglers of all ages.
"Keep the tangles as little like 'drawing something' as possible."
