How to draw PATHWAY

Pathway is Vandana’s third tangle on the site, most recently she shared her Heartangles with us.

Pathway is an easy grid-based tangle and as you’ll see in Vandana’s illustration, it’s a versatile one with lots of ways to change it up.

Vandana writes,

The inspiration behind this pattern was a sidewalk/pathway near my studio.

It is interesting what a wide variety of patterns can go unnoticed right beneath our feet in the very walks of our lives.

After a few practice rounds with Pathway, I found I could go right to Step 3 and tangle the curvy figure in a continuous stroke. However you find yourself tangling it, I think you’ll enjoy this one and have fun with embellishments. Changing the shape of the underlying grid from squares to rectangles or even a wonky/undulating one, are more ways to play with most grid-based tangles.

Vandana illustrates the step-by-step instructions for drawing Pathway below where she also demonstrates a variety of interesting ways to explore it. In the first of her three lovely Zentangle® tile examples Vandana has included the Zentangle-original ’Nzeppel.

You will also find Vandana’s illustration here but as it’s not possible to download the steps from her blog she has graciously given permission for me to add the steps for her tangles on TanglePatterns for your downloading convenience. When you visit her blog you’ll also see a photo of Vandana’s inspiration for Pathway.

Thus patterns that are drawings of a recognizable naturalistic or actual object, figure, or scene, are not tangles. A pattern is not always a tangle — here's what makes a tangle.
