The Art of Zentangle

The Art of ZentangleA brand new Walter Foster Publishing title enters the burgeoning market of Zentangle® titles and publishers.

The Art of Zentangle®: 50 inspiring drawings, designs & ideas for the meditative artist by CZTs Margaret Bremner, Norma J. Burnell, Penny Raile, and Lara Williams is now available from Amazon.com. (List: $19.95, Amazon $12.12)

Described by the publisher, “The Art of Zentangle will first demonstrate how to create Zentangle art by showing intricate patterns broken out into several steps. After artists have warmed up and are ready to give it a try on their own, they’ll be invited to practice creating their own Zentangle designs on the beautifully designed blank pages of this inspirational sketch journal. A short gallery of final artwork and several inspirational prompts are included in this comprehensive introduction to the new, inspirational world of Zentangle.”

From the back cover, “inspiration abounds in this guided journey … thanks to the creative expressions of four talented Certified Zentangle® Teachers. … Step-by-step projects demonstrate how to create Zentangle mandalas, Zentangle Inspired Art, and tangled wall décor. … Open practice areas throughout the book invite you to try the techniques described, as well as put your creative ideas and tangling skills to use.”

At a substantial 1.5 pounds, this 144 page “inspirational sketch journal” measures 8.7 x 0.7 x 11.6 inches and is one of the most colorful titles on the Zentangle block.

Although it’s titled The Art of Zentangle, the book does not explain the Zentangle method and is by no means the “comprehensive introduction” the publisher claims.

While the reader does not learn the foundational Zentangle art form from this book, what The Art of Zentangle does is focus on applying patterns to lots of creative projects, guided by four very talented CZTs. Each of the artists has a colored section in the book with projects to inspire:

  • Penny Raile’s yellow section is about whimsical tangling with creatures and other fantasy motifs
  • Norma Burnell’s turquoise section features a hummingbird project and her ZIA fairies
  • Margaret Bremner’s green section is about mandalas and has a step-by-step project to create your own
  • Lara Williams’s purple section is about “tangling outside the box” and creating strings

The “inspirational sketch journal” has spaces throughout for you to draw in the book to practice copying the projects and a number of blank pages for your own creative contributions.

The Art of Zentangle is likely to “draw” many into the enjoyment of drawing and develop their confidence with its practical step-by-step Zentangle-inspired projects.

I was introduced to Zentangle through this book and it’s been my constant companion for the last week. I’ve been especially inspired by Margaret Bremner’s mandalas and the idea of using a “snowflake” as a template.
