How to draw YA

Another Monday and another week full of possibilities for your Zentangle® creativity!

Today we have a pretty tangle named Ya to explore and it’s Taiwan CZT Sandy Ho’s first on the site.

Sandy is from the CZT Asia#3 class of July 2017.

She writes that Ya is inspired by clover and what fun to learn that finding four-leaf clover has the same meaning all around the world,

When we find four leaves of lucky grass in the garden, we all feel very lucky and shout “YA”.

I hope this lovely deconstruction pattern has the opportunity to share with friends.

Let’s find out a little more about “lucky grass” from Wikipedia,

The four-leaf clover is a rare variation of the common three-leaf clover. According to traditional superstition, such clovers bring good luck, though it is not clear when or how this superstition began.

The earliest mention of “Fower-leafed or purple grasse” is from 1640 and simply says that it was kept in gardens because it was “good for the purples in children or others”.

… The first reference to luck might be from an 11-year-old girl, who wrote in an 1877 letter to St. Nicholas Magazine, “Did the fairies ever whisper in your ear, that a four-leaf clover brought good luck to the finder?”

Ya is easy to tangle but there are subtleties to it that might not be immediately obvious. Notice in Step 4 that the two shapes are not simply mirrored loop/petal shapes. There’s almost a puffy 3D look created by the slight difference in shapes where the left side appears to go behind the right side. There’s also extra space between the four sets of shapes to create the 4-leaf clover effect. I need a little more work on that part. Ya!

Sandy illustrates the step-by-step instructions for drawing Ya below where she features it in a lovely tile with some Fescu tendrils and where her shading sets off the frame so nicely. Be sure to note Sandy’s cute/clever chop!
