B’Twined is today’s very cool tangle pattern and it’s from CZT Pegi Schargel of Portland, OR. This is her first tangle on the site.
Pegi says she named this B’Twined “because when creating it, it surprised me as I had no idea that the results would appear to ‘Be So Entwined’.”
B’Twined is one of those 3D “over-under” tangles that are so visually interesting and it’s a super simple tangle to draw. Pegi writes,
As a teacher turned business woman with 4 other companies, I had been searching for a way to experience creative artistic satisfaction, yet hadn’t found ‘it’. I certainly had no formal art training, so I thought I had no artistic talent. I began Zentangling after my husband David purchased Beckah’s Krahula’s “One Zentangle a Day” book as an unexpected gift. I didn’t have a clue what Zentangle was about so I worked my way through her book. I was hooked! Eureka!, I have found “It”! I laid the footwork for my newest business in 2013 and became Certified to teach shortly after that. I teach regularly scheduled classes at Do More Art in Portland, OR and Chehalis, WA and also instruct in multiple levels of Zentangle at a local community college. I have a near-daily Zentangle practice that keeps me sane and calm. My life has changed because of Zentangle. I love the sense of flow I attain while creating Zentangle art. Most of all I thrive on teaching it to others.
B’Twined is easy to draw yet looks complex. Only 2 strokes are used, straight-ish lines and parenthesis strokes, and it is complete in just a few steps.
B’Twined lends itself to great shading options with both pen and graphite as well as potential tangleations i.e. use a straight line instead of the parenthesis stroke for a nice latticework pattern, use a single row for a tile border, etc. I’ve even filled circles with it.
For my example of B’Twined I got out a pen I haven’t used in quite a while, my Sakura Pigma Graphic 1. I forgot how “wet” the Graphic 1 ink goes on. You have to be very careful of smudging before it dries and also the tip is a little soft. So it’s not great for getting into tight corners but perfect for large solid areas.
Pegi illustrates the step-by-step instructions for drawing B’Twined here on her blog. The blog image is a little blurry but if you click on it, a much larger clear image appears for you to download for your personal reference.
Pegi’s tips for drawing B’Twined:
- Step 2’s parenthesis need to be placed close to the diagonal line so that step 4 fits and connects properly.
- When doing step 4, I think of making the parenthesis strokes in a ‘Hollibaugh’ fashion – by ‘drawing behind’.
- I sometimes use only right ) parenthesis strokes and turn my tile to begin each new iteration of parentheses. My results tend to end up more even that way, but then I am a lefty.

Ooooooo love the new site!!
Thanks Lauri, the mobile version has always been available and you can switch back to the desktop version by scrolling down to the bottom of any page and using the links here. The problem with the mobile version is that the alphabetic menu bar for the tangles isn’t available there, but I hope to resolve that issue in the near future.
Oh my goodness, I am in love with this tangle. So simple yet clever. I know it will be my newest favorite go-to tangle. Thank you Pegi, and Linda for publishing it!
B’twined ………..could not get a “clear” picture to download, sorry.
Try reading my post again .. 🙂
Pegi – This is a great tangle!
Love this pattern. I am anxious to give it a try. Thank you for sharing!
Thanks, Pegi. This one is super easy, but very impressive when done! I just know this is going to become one of my favorites!
Pegi, Thanks so much. I love this pattern!!! It looks complex but it is so easy to create…it is my new fav. Again, Thanks so much!
The instructions were too blurry to see. I like the look of the completed pattern but because of the instructions, I didn’t try it myself.
Try reading my post again … 🙂
Awesome tangle. I found if when I enlarged the step outs it was not blurry anymore.
Can’t wait to try this one. Thanks so much for sharing!
Very nice one!
Thank you for your positive comments about B’Twined! I am happy that it has been so well received and that people are enjoying using it. I love sharing it with everyone. I have posted some additional tips that you might find useful on my blog.
I apologize for the blurry image. I don’t understand why the first image is so blurry, but no worries… just click on the image again to get a clear view of the step-outs and then if you want to see it huge, click again while hovering over the image. That should do it.
Wondering – Are we allowed to print out a picture of B’Twined. I like to print out a picture of the steps, go sit on my couch in a cozy position and work the tangles. So far, have been unable to print this one. Thanks for sharing Pegi
Hi Sherillee, yes you are allowed to print for your personal reference only. Try downloading it to your computer first before attempting to print.
What a great tangle!
First class tangle.
i love it
