How to draw MAISIE

Zentangle pattern: MaisieMaisie is a pretty tangle pattern from the UK’s Carla Jennings and it’s her first on the site.

Carla writes, “I called this pattern Maisie because this was my Gran’s name. When I was about 10 years old my Gran and I used to sit for hours, with a book of graph paper and felt tip pens, creating patterns using leaf shapes inside the squares of the paper. I wanted to create a tangle in memory of my lovely Gran.

I came across Zentangle® online just over a year ago whilst I was suffering from a bad spate of post natal depression….it ended up being exactly what I needed to help me get through. I became addicted to it pretty much straight away and really miss it if a day goes by where I don’t get chance to ‘tangle’. I’ve loved art & crafts, and especially pattern, for as long as I can remember but never thought I’d enjoy drawing such intricate stuff.

Sometimes it can be a challenge to get an evenly undulating line, as in Carla’s Step 1. When I wanted a more even look than what I was getting, I drew the leaf shapes first and then “aura’d” the lines around them. You get the same pretty pattern with just a little different approach. As you’ll note, I used one of Carla’s variations for my example.

Carla illustrates the step-by-step instructions for drawing Maisie here.

Here Carla demonstrates a few ways to vary her tangle and I have no doubt you can come up with many more!
