How to draw BATCH

Zentangle pattern: Batch. Image © Linda Farmer and TanglePatterns.com. ALL RIGHTS RESERVED. You may use this image for your personal non-commercial reference only. The unauthorized pinning, reproduction or distribution of this copyrighted work is illegal.Batch is another tangle pattern from Australian tangler Helen Williams, inspired by {{{{{{ }}}}}} “curly brackets”.

Helen has contributed several popular tangles including the bracket-related Brax, as well as Heartstrings and Leaflet. She’s gained many fans for her beautiful, flowing drawing style.

Helen writes, “I love patterns where the grid becomes part of the design – gives me lines to work with and a sense of control (sort of).

I’m not the greatest at drawing curly brackets so I found the underlying grid for Batch helped with getting more consistent bracket shapes, that sense of control Helen mentions. If you choose to fill the area around the grid as I did with pencil in my example, the grid almost disappears into the pattern. If you leave it without any shading or fill, Batch has a cool twisty look. Then the rest of the open spaces of the pattern invite a whole range of embellishments if you so choose. I like the minimalist original myself.

Helen illustrates the step-by-step instructions for drawing Batch here on her blog.

Update 08/21/2015 – Helen has just posted this video for drawing Batch where she also demonstrates how to draw it without the underlying grid. You can also find the video here on her blog.
