How to draw LOKOMOTIVE

Lokomotive is a tangle pattern created by Stephanie Kukla and she writes that it emerged like magic while she was talking on the phone recently.

The tangle’s name comes from Stephanie imagining this would be what an old steam locomotive’s wheels would look like from the perspective of a frog sitting beside the tracks while a train whizzed by.

Stephanie illustrates the steps for drawing her Lokomotive tangle here. UPDATE: Stephanie has changed her site and unfortunately it now prevents access so the link has been removed. I’ve emailed to ask permission to post the steps on TanglePatterns but Stephanie has not responded.

Fortunately, Lokomotive is easy to test your deconstruction skills. Tip: start with a rectangular (not square) grid. Next, make a curved line diagonally from one corner to the opposite corner … I think you can take it from there. Easy peasy.
