How to draw FLAG-DOW

CZT Candace Mok shares her grid-based Flag-dow tangle with us today, it’s her second tangle on the site.

Candace explains her inspiration for Flag-dow and its name:

When I was walking to work one day, I saw some flag-like shadows formed under some windowsills on the wall of a building.

I deconstructed the picture I saw and turned out it became something surprisingly playful.

Flag-dow is a tangle full of potentials and surprises. Every time I draw it – I knew it well – yet it seems new to me. It invites me to play with it, expand it, reduce it, transform it. It is a tangle full of questions!

Flag-dow first appears as monotonic, and then sometimes you think they form patterns in random ways until you figure out they are tangled in particular sequences or directions.

I am so excited to share about Flag-dow, yet, I think the best way for you to understand it is to tangle it. Don’t forget to ask questions and see how Flag-dow answers you!

Rotate it? Mirror it? What tangleation can it form? How big it can get? How to make it organic?… I can’t wait to see how you play with Flag-dow!

For my example of Flag-dow I chose a simple fill variation from the solid black. It truly is endlessly variable as Candace so enthusiastically explains.
