Happy Monday y’all, I hope you’ve been keeping warm through this incredible cold snap we’re having right now and enjoying a nice long weekend.
In keeping with the cold theme, today I’ve reached back into the archives for an interesting and fun tangle from Belgian CZT Rita Nikolajeva.
Isla is Rita’s fourth tangle on the site. “This one reminds me of some orchids, or else Islandic moss (hence Isla).”
When I think of Iceland, I definitely think “cold”. And their amazing national football team with their signature “Viking clap” but that’s a whole ‘nother discussion.
When Rita posted Isla in her flickr account she explained that it was inspired by patterns she observed on “beautiful kerchiefs” being worn at the time by Polish Airlines flight attendants.
While the steps demonstrate a radial or sunburst type of design, Isla can fit into all kinds of shaped segments in a Zentangle tile. Shading does add a bit of contour to Isla but it’s not really necessary for an effective result. I particularly enjoyed the inking part of Isla, very soothing indeed …
Rita illustrates the step-by-step instructions for drawing Isla here on her flickr account.
As you enjoy any of the tangles on the site, please leave a comment of thanks and encouragement to show the artists you appreciate them for sharing their creativity to inspire yours. Your thanks helps motivate them to continue to share!

I really like this tangle, it could hold a gemstone in the center or be used for multimedia art.
Fun tangle. It offers a lot of flexibility. I tried it within a circle vs a square and added lots of “antlers”. My pen just went wherever it wanted to go. Thank you for sharing.
I enjoy this tangle. There is so many ways to play with it. I do like Donna’s idea about a gemstone in the center also. Thank you for ISLA.
I finally had time to sit down with this tangle this morning. And I love it. I tried it in a square, and in a circle and in a wonky shaped uneven circle. This will be fun to try different ways. Thank you!
So interesting. I see heart-centers for Valentines Day.
