How to draw SHOOTING STAR

We’ve enjoyed some very entertaining matches so far in the FIFA World Cup — what about Iceland! and Mexico! — and the competition is just warming up! Curious about scores? More excitement to come …

The lovely Shooting Star tangle is from a young Wellington, New Zealand tangler, Maia Tonkin.

Maia was a student of CZT Rhiannon McKinstry who illustrated and published the steps for Shooting Star on her blog.

As sometimes (and strangely) happens with pattern submissions, Shooting Star arrived in my inbox just days before I had a conceptually similar tangle prepared and scheduled for publication: CZT Loretta West’s Zailz tangle. As a result I put Shooting Star aside for the time being but in a recent review of pending tangles it rose to prominence again. Thus we enjoy it today.

Rhiannon introduces Maia’s tangle,

A student of mine made a brilliant and beautiful tangle that I just had to have fun with! I asked if I could diagram and share it, and she agreed with excitement.

It is very simple to draw, just a few dots and many repeated C’s. It grows in a beautiful deliberate manner, which makes me feel a bit like stroking a cat. =^-,-^=

You can vary the direction of the C’s, or put the dots in triangles rather than squares for a different effect. It also works great as a single layer border.

Shooting Star also looks different depending on where/if you add shading. In my main example I shaded where the strokes converge at the points. In the example on the right I shaded along the vertical curve giving an overlapping effect.

Shooting Star would also look pretty interesting when alternating “rays” are inked in. Or filled with color for those so inclined …

Rhiannon illustrates the step-by-step instructions for drawing Maia’s Shooting Star here on her blog. The steps also demonstrate how you can vary the starting dot grid points for various effects. [UPDATE June 2020 – the link to Rhiannon’s blog is broken so until she contacts me with a correction, here are the steps for your convenience.]

Thanks to everyone who participated in Jenny Perruzzi’s Crystals for a Cause FUNdraiser

Image courtesy of PixabayMy heartfelt gratitude to those of you who purchased Crystals for a Cause in last week’s fundraiser initiated and organized by CZT Jenny Perruzzi. And especially to Jenny for her enthusiasm and dedication.

Jenny’s efforts raised $500 for TanglePatterns and that will help cover the cost of the service delivering the email newsletters for a couple of months. Deeply appreciated.

I am grateful to you all, with your help TanglePatterns continues to be a dedicated and constant resource that has networked the Zentangle community for over 8 years.

If you missed a chance to participate in the fundraiser, might I suggest you get a copy of the 2018 Edition of the TanglePatterns.com TANGLE GUIDE. If you have an old edition, it’s time to update and support the site. It’s a win-win proposition!
