How to draw TERRA

Today’s delicate Terra tangle is from Japanese CZT Shinmi Sato.

It’s been well over a year since Shinmi shared the lovely tangle she dedicated to her CZT seminar roommate, Fran, and the tragic story of the loss of her own son to suicide.

Since that time Shinmi’s experience as a Certified Zentangle Teacher has enriched her life in many unexpected ways. She writes,

Zentangle changed my life brightly.

I appeared on television this year and taught Zentangle to Zen priests. 

The main purpose in people’s life is to love and respect themselves. That is what Zentangle taught me.

As with many tangles, Terra looks complicated but in fact it is very easy to tangle. It is composed of a regularly spaced dot grid and just one elemental stroke: the curve.

I added auras after Step 6 in my example above and as you’ll see in Shinmi’s second tile, Terra enticingly invites decorating those inner spaces created by the curves. When you’ve finished tangling Terra, it’s hard to figure out how it was done!

Shinmi illustrates the step-by-step instructions for drawing Terra below where she demonstrates it in a simple monotangle on a Renaissance Zentangle tile.
