Today’s lovely, flowing new Joki tangle is from Dutch tangler Kim Claus, and it’s her first on the site.
Joki looks as if it could come from free-motion quilting, but that’s complete speculation on my part – and I’m not even a quilter so take my guess with a grain of salt 😉
Kim introduces herself and explains how Joki got its name …
I’m from the Netherlands where I live with my husband and our labrador Tess.
I started with Zentangle in 2014. I was not feeling very well in that time and was looking for something that I could do to that made me feel better. As a little girl I was always drawing and when I was searching for something new in 2014 I discovered Zentangle. And it instantly had the effect I was looking for. It helped me relax, have less pain and my self esteem grew. It made me happy.
This year I participated in the Travelling Tangles Project on Facebook and I did a swap with Jo Flaherty. She sent me a beautiful tile to finish. On that tile Joki appeared. When I had to come up with a name for this new tangle I put the first 2 letters of our names together.
Joki also means ‘river’ in Finnish, and that fits with the flow and feel of Joki.
Joki is such a pretty tangle, and so easy to get into a rhythm tangling all those curves. Adding just a touch of shading gives it even more visual interest. As Kim writes, “Joki is good to use as a filler, but also very beautiful as monotangle.”
Kim illustrates the step-by-step instructions for drawing Joki here on her blog and includes a video demonstration where she tangles a Zentangle® tile featuring Joki.
Update August 2024: the link on Kim’s blog is no longer working, so until I’ve been notified that it’s been repaired here for your convenience are her original steps.
As you enjoy any of the tangles on the site, please do leave a comment of thanks and encouragement to show the artists you appreciate them for sharing their creativity to inspire yours.
