The tangle pattern Corn Rows appears in CZT® Suzanne McNeill’s first Zentangle® book, Zentangle Basics.
Corn Rows is an easy filler to draw and has possibilities for variation with one I’ve shown here. Suzanne’s original pattern is in the upper left corner – I drew the pattern on a grid and left out the background shading in the white squares, opting to fill in the shapes instead.
As a novice at drawing I learned quite an interesting lesson with this pattern. These shapes were all drawn the same size before I did any fills. Yet the dark background squares have much smaller dots than the light background squares. Why? The background fill made the circles appear much smaller because their outlines became part of the background. So next time I would draw those initial circles much larger where I plan to fill in the background. Not earthshaking, but something new I learned today!

Glad you found that helpful, Gabriele. It’s always fun to discover something like that. I guess one has to focus on the white space that the inside of the circle is forming, instead of looking at the line you are drawing.
Hi Linda, thanks for the tips you provide in your site. This trick with making the circles bigger when filling around them is very useful. The problem is to remember it :p I still keep forgetting and end up with teeny circles! Unlike some of mine yours look really good though and the size difference adds interests 😀
After reading about your allergies (which resulted in a new tangle variation) I was wondering where in Florida you lived only to find out an hour later that I was in your neighborhood visiting a friend – synchronicity! Reflecting on how much I love getting the regular tangle instructions/inspiration I realized it was TIME TO DONATE! Thanks so much for the wonderful resource you provide!
