CZT® Margaret Bremner’s tangle pattern Box Spirals is based on the classic form known as a fret, in the classification system of “1836 basic designs and their variations” by Clarence P. Hornung in his “alphabet” of decorative motifs, Handbook of Designs and Devices, first published in 1932.
Margaret’s variant takes the official patterns Ambler and Emingle “out of the box” and plays with the basic form in another typical Zentangle® fashion: drawing behind. The result is this free-fall of frets which I’ve taken the liberty of shading in my drawing of Margaret’s artistry.
Margaret illustrates the step-by-step instructions for drawing Box Spirals here.

well I got yoga for the brain and zentangles 2,3,4 and totaly tangled and Im in awwww, lol now to have some fun!
love the simplicity of the BOX SPIRALS 🙂 i have been tangling for a few weeks now and can’t stop! my husband just got the ZENTANGLES 4 book (i got him into it too lol) and we have TOTALLY TANGLED as well… i have 3 journals going…(2 moleskin) one B&W the other some color and a 3RD on beautiful hand made paper fr tree barks in asia somewhere(peeling off the bark helps the trees grow)…the hand made paper journal is harder to tangle on-need an 05 micron pen and using pencil for shading is super tricky…only thing i DON’T have is the OFFICIAL ZENTANGLE paper cards…is it worth getting a bundle? wondering what the difference is between the moleskin journal and the official ZENTANGLE paper…also, is there a way of storiing the 3.5″ x 3.5″ official paper? like an album of sorts w/plastic sleeves?
thanks to anyone that can answer 🙂

I too have been looking for a storage solution for my tiles. I’m so excited because I just found an online store that carries plastic storage sheets (they fit in a 3-ring binder) that fit 6 Zentangle tiles perfectly! I also have yet to read where everyone keeps/stores their completed Zentangles and when I came across this store with these storage sleeves, I was thrilled and called the owner immediately!!!
So here’s the scoop: The online store is http://www.cropstop.com (out of Rhode Island) The owner has created a special web page within her online store just for these storage sleeves that hold the Zentangle tiles perfectly. The storage sleeves are sold: 5 sheets per package for $4.50, 10 sheets per package for $7.50, and 25 sheets per package for $14.00. Enter the word “zentangle” in the search engine on the upper right hand side of the home page and it will take you right to these storage sleeves.
When I spoke to the store owner I explained what Zentangle is, how we use the tiles, and how this particular storage sleeve she carries fits our tiles perfectly. Guess what? She agreed to give us Zentanglers 10% off our orders by using the code “zentangle” when checking out. How great is that!!! (And just so you know, I do not work for her, nor will I receive any compensation for however many of these she might sell. I just wanted to help out all the wonderful people who like me, love to create Zentangles, but just don’t have a “place” to store all of our completed tiles.)
I hope this helps out!
Angela
Thanks, Angela!
Let’s move this discussion of ideas for storing completed Zentangle tiles to the comments on this new page in the TIPS & TOOLS section, ZENTANGLE STORAGE IDEAS –

Hi Andrea, the Zentangle tiles are quite different from the Moleskine books – unless you’re referring to the Moleskine watercolor book. The official tiles are, if I’m not mistaken, fine 140 lb die-cut watercolor paper. They’re lovely to draw on – you should do yourself (and your hubby) a favor and get a pack to try them. It’s a much nicer presentation of your artwork too.
this is quaint Margaret; it reminds me of an art-deco version of the @ symbol. I look forward to playing some more with the patterns but just have to wait for my eye surgery of this week to sort out a while yet…
I love the idea of storing your zentangle tiles in a mini cd disk storage plastic sheet that stores 4 to 8 zentangles at a time. Great idea! Now I need to get myself to an office supply store and buy me a package of these sheet protectors to better store and display my zentangle tiles where I go. Clever idea! Thanks for sharing!
