This pretty tangle pattern, Podz, is from North Carolina CZT Nancy Newlin who writes,
“I have a native plant in my yard called various names including Strawberry bush and ‘hearts-a-bustin’-with-love’ (Euonymus americanus).
In the fall, the green pods turn red and burst open. Small red fruits drop from their capsule leaving a bright red pod with five sections, the inspiration for this tangle.“
I found the above image on the Lady Bird Johnson Wildflower Center website and Nancy sent along this one of the fully open red pod from her garden.
“As I experimented with Podz, I discovered some variations (tangleations) and others certainly are possible.
I thought that drawing a five-sided tangle would be hard to do in a consistent fashion, but some randomness and differences in section length and placement make it more interesting.“
Nancy illustrates the step-by-step instructions for drawing Podz below and also provides some suggestions of variations for her tangle.
Here are some Podz variations for you to try …

Hi Nancy, Amazing! I have seen these flowers/pods growing but have never seen one close up, just love the formation. Now I will be looking at every growing thing around. How clever to make a tangle directly from nature. Oh, the possibilities. Many thanks for sharing it. Peggie Aust.
I love this tangle, thanks for sharing.
Beautiful tangle, Nancy!
love this picture, i have a variety of this tree in my garden and love its fruit. In the UK this tree is known as the wayfarer tree or spindle tree. i want this variety and will be on the look out for it.
Luv this tangle. Would also look good if different colors are used. Thank you.
Fun flow!
a beautiful Tangle!!
