How timely to start off our Summer season in the tropics with the Tropicana tangle pattern. Minnesota CZT and school teacher Kate Ahrens send us this new tangle to add to our creative arsenal. It’s been some time since she shared her sweet Widgets tangle that’s so fun play with and has been very popular.
Kate writes that Tropicana “was deconstructed from a pattern found on a lid.”
There are lots of ways to vary this interesting tangle but for a change of pace I chose Kate’s original version for my example.
Kate illustrates the step-by-step instructions for drawing Tropicana below and she shows several ways to vary her tangle in three “faux” Zentangles, and also displayed in an artist trading card (ATC) format.
Update: I just discovered Kate has also published the steps here on her blog, check it out!
Check out the tag katea for more of Kate’s patterns on TanglePatterns.com.

Nili Marcia – This is a lovely pattern. The lid it came from had a rendering of a traditional pattern called egg-and-dart which goes back all the way to the Greeks. I have personally stripped and refinished acres of oak egg-and-dart on plate rails and other locations in post Victorian home renovations.
Wikipedia has very little on it but if you look up egg-and-dart molding you will see many versions including one exactly like this new tangle pattern. I look forward to using this one.
best wishes,
Nili

Joan – Nili, thanks for your note about the architecture points and Kate,
thanks for this tangle. I love the vague blend of organic and
geometric and all left to the imagination to play with.
