How to draw WEBEN

This 3D tangle pattern was brought to our attention earlier this week by CZT® Molly Hollibaugh via Rick at Zentangle HQ.

Weben comes to us from Germany’s Idi Lowenherz. Idi’s inspiration for Weben came from this copyright stock photo image by Elizabeth Leong of Singapore.

Rick writes, “Molly came across this tangle called weben (German for ‘weave’)” on flickr by idiloewenherz. “It’s a perfect tangle for shading. It’s simple, yet asks you to pay attention. It offers a three-dimensional surprise. Its first two steps are just like W2, yet one simple change takes it in a fun and unexpected direction . . . sorta like a combination of Mi2 and W2!” Here’s my example of W2 on the right for comparison.

If, like me, you have trouble getting the starting squares aligned and sized evenly — if that is your goal — I suggest using Rick’s tip for Mi2 of placing a grid of pen dots where you want the squares to go. Then draw the squares over the dots.

My Mom calls these patterns “over-unders” — they are fun to do and look so cool when they’re completed with shading. (BTW – you can find more patterns like this by clicking on the tag weave in the left sidebar under TANGLES BY TYPE.)
