How to draw EVERSON

Greetings my tangling friends.

Our last-but-not-least tangle for this week, Everson, is another fun and flexible one from Maryland CZT Angie Gittles.

Recently Angie has deconstructed a wide range of tangles inspired by pottery of the indigenous peoples of the Southwestern United States and Northern Mexico. Her first in this series was Hokam from last year and Everson joins several more we’ve explored since then. There are more to come!

Angie introduces Everson:

Everson is inspired by a Navajo hand-painted, etched pot signed E. Whitegoat.

According to online vendors, “Everson” Whitegoat is part of the Navajo Nation and part of the Salt Water clan.

I couldn’t find any references in any Native American or Navajo Nation sites to his clan, so that info may or may not be correct. I was able to confirm that E. Whitegoat is Everson Whitegoat, and his sister is another Navajo potter, Hilda Whitegoat.

Hilda learned from Susie Charlie who is credited with being one of the early pioneers of the Navajo etched pottery style. Susie Charlie is also the sister of Hilda and Everson Whitegoat.

Angie illustrates the step-by-step instructions for drawing Everson below she illustrates ways to turn and mirror the fragments to create different looks and she features it in a lovely ZIA monotangle tile with a watercolor background.
