How to draw MADRINA

Hi there my tangling friends and thanks for joining me this fine Monday.

Our last tangle for this month is Madrina from Spanish tangler Itxaso Ruiz and it’s her third tangle on the site.

For those of you who haven’t come across Itxaso’s first tangle, Bilbotarra, there I explained: “A little research tells me Itxaso is pronounced E-cha-so.”

Madrina is an easy and versatile grid-based tangle to add to your repertoire. Itxaso shares her tangle’s origins and gives us some ideas for using it in our Zentangles:

I spend my holiday time in Galicia, Spain, with my aunt. My aunt is also my godmother, called Madrina in Spanish. I’ve been inspired for creating Madrina by a tile in her house.

We can use Madrina inside a square or like a fragment. First, we draw two mirroring C form lines and both auras. Then, we draw an aura outside. And finally, in then middle we draw an orb with 3 petal forms in each side.

We can use Madrina like a fragment, changing its direction or in mirror. We can play with the size or amount of auras and the form of the petals.

Madrina can be used with or without the reticula/grid lines.

In my explorations of Madrina I discovered it’s important in Step 1 to curve the strokes well enough to leave a good sized rice-shaped space in the middle. These are aura-ed inside the curves and you might end up with not enough space left for the middle embellishment.
