How to draw HEARTANGLES

We have arrived at one of my favorite times of the year — the back-to-school sales have begun!

I am not a shopper, browsing stores has never been my thing. When I need something specific I perform a surgical strike: go in, get it, and get out. That’s me. However! I can get lost for {quite} a while in an office supplies store and this is the best time of year for that. Art supplies stores are a whole other, and far more serious, issue. Fortunately my pocketbook is spared because there isn’t a good art supply store in my neighborhood.

The days of delighting in getting new supplies for school have long since faded in the mists of time, but seeing all the stocked up displays of shiny new office supplies on sale is just a joy to behold. And perchance to bring one or two new items home with me. So Office Depot or Staples … here I come 🙂 Happy back-to-school days.

Today’s Heartangles is from Indian CZT Vandana Krishna who recently shared her Mintea tangle with us.

Heartangles is so named because it is composed of heart shapes and triangles. It’s one of those patterns you look at and wonder how it was done. (Answer: Step by simple step!)

Vandana writes,

The Zentangle® original Tripoli is one of my favorite tangles and I usually explore it as a monotangle.

The other day, while I was playing with Tripoli on a Zendala, for filling the triangular reticula, I started doing heart shapes and filled them with ink.

After I did this for a few of them, I started seeing the meta-shapes and began playing with it further as shown here in the inspiration Zendala.

For my example I started with the basic Heartangles in the triangle grid as shown on the right. Then I decided to fill the center and spaces around the outer edges with radiating strokes. But I had an oopsie in one of the corners so I inked it in as well as the opposite corner — no mistakes in Zentangle!

For this tangle to work out pleasingly, each triangle is done one at a time with the half-heart shapes in the same orientation around the perimeter of the triangle (Step 3), then moving to the adjacent triangle (Step 4) so the heart shapes ultimately created match up and the overall effect is achieved.

Vandana illustrates the step-by-step instructions for drawing Heartangles below where she also shares three lovely tiles. “In the examples, on one white tile I have used the pattern along with the Zentangle-original Pokeroot; on the other I have used Tripoli as the triangular grid. On the grey tile, I have explored the pattern as a frame.” The steps image is not downloadable from Vandana’s site so she graciously provides it for us here. But you can visit her blog post where she gives more background and tips for tangling Heartangles.

Thus patterns that are drawings of a recognizable naturalistic or actual object, figure, or scene, are not tangles. A pattern is not always a tangle — here's what makes a tangle.
