Rick and Maria introduce Zentangle at the National Museum of American Illustrators summer lecture series

In the final event of the National Museum of American Illustrators (NMAI) 2018 Summer Lecture Series on Saturday, August 25th in Newport, Rhode Island, Zentangle® co-founders Maria Thomas and Rick Roberts spoke about the art of Zentangle.

The video is chock full of beautiful samples from Maria’s long and extraordinary career as an artist and “an exuberant calligrapher”.

These include the wedding invitation for Catherine Zeta-Jones and Michael Douglas, an invitation to celebrate Ted Turner’s 70th birthday, her gorgeous botanical illustrations, and best of all a closeup look into some of her portfolios.

Further, from the NMAI introduction, “Thomas and Roberts discussed what the Zentangle Method is, how it began, and how easy it is to learn. By combining the lecture with images and demonstrations, they related familiar Zentangle patterns to the artistry found throughout the NMAI – in both its art and its architecture.

Rick and Maria’s passion and excitement is so engaging to watch. I’m sure you’ll really enjoy spending this time with them.

Robert and I have a wonderful collection of Maxfield Parrish calendar illustrations, magazine covers and prints (including Daybreak) we (more accurately he) collected over 30 years ago while we lived in Pittsburgh. I’ll have to take a closer look at the frames to see what treasures might be hidden there!

“Parrish’s art is characterized by vibrant colors; the color Parrish blue was named after him. He achieved such luminous color through glazing.”

I’d LOVE to see that exhibit.
