Tangle Refresher 166 – Featuring a random string, plus how to draw Noom, Ginili, No-No, Sunsun, Lenche

Tangle Refresher!Tomorrow is Veterans’ Day here in the USA and Remembrance Day (or Poppy Day) in Canada, the UK, Australia and many other countries.

A couple of years ago I covered quite a bit of background about this annual observance. And I am incredibly touched when I go back and revisit the remarkable Blood Swept Lands and Seas of Red art installation and take time to think about everything it represents to our countries.

“Blood Swept Lands and Seas of Red was a work of installation art placed in the moat of the Tower of London, England, between July and November 2014, commemorating the centenary of the outbreak of World War I. It consisted of 888,246 ceramic red poppies, each intended to represent one British or Colonial serviceman killed in the War. The artist was Paul Cummins, with setting by stage designer Tom Piper. The work’s title was taken from the first line of a poem by an unknown World War I soldier.” ~ Wikipedia

That UK poppy installation prompted Australian tangler Helen Williams to share another remarkable poppy installation honoring the centenary of Anzac Day in Melbourne, Australia. Helen wrote, “the goal was to have 5,000 crochet poppies created for the 100th anniversary of the Gallipoli landing – it was undertaken over 2 years – they ended up with 250,000 poppies.” You can view a video about that installation here.

We thank and honor our Veterans and all those who are serving, not just on November 11th but every day, for their brave and selfless service to our countries and for their personal sacrifices that ensure our democracies and the freedoms we all enjoy. Blessings for each and every one.

“Never was so much owed by so many to so few.” ~ Winston Churchill

Many tanglers like to use these biweekly Tangle Refreshers as their Zentangle® challenge-of-the-day.

In that spirit I used the RANDOM SELECTOR in the left sidebar (desktop version of the site) to choose this TanglePatterns String – either to go with today’s Buried Treasure or just to use as a starting point for your day’s tangling.

Think of this as your tangle Challenge, if you’re so inclined. TanglePatterns String 235 is from Anita Aspfors Westin and was originally posted here.

Remember that Zentangle strings are always drawn freehand in pencil so that they magically disappear when you’ve finished tangling the tile.

A string is a simple device to “divide your drawing surface into sections to be filled with tangles“.

In the Zentangle PRIMER Vol 1 there is an entire section devoted to Strings which in part explains:

As you tangle, your strings disappear as if by magic. This adds to the charm and unified appearance of your completed art. If you had used a pen to draw your string, you would still see the initial sectioning in your completed creation.

Strings are not intended to be the focal point of your tile.

More String advice from The Book of Zentangle:

A string is a useful reference, but it is not an impenetrable barrier. Practice going outside your string. It will help increase your ability to think outside the box.

The Tangle Refresher series, aka Buried Treasure, spotlights hidden tangle gems from the past. It can remind you of tangles you might not have used for a while or introduce you to some you haven’t come across yet.

Here are five more tangle pattern gems and a Tangle Refresher from a year (or two) ago for your tangling pleasure. Remember to check out the “More Good Stuff” links below too.

BTW as you visit these tangles please do leave a comment of thanks and encouragement to show the artists you appreciate them for sharing their creativity to inspire yours. And please share a link to your favorite tangles with your followers on all your social media. Thanks!

Zenful tangling!
