How to draw KIASOM

Image © Linda Farmer and TanglePatterns.com. ALL RIGHTS RESERVED. You may use this image for your personal non-commercial reference only. The unauthorized reproduction or distribution (including pinning) of this copyrighted work is illegal.Kiasom comes to us from German tangler Annette Plaga-Lodde, who is very excited because she’s coming to Providence RI in April to become a Certified Zentangle Teacher at the 23rd CZT® training seminar.

Excitement levels are rising for all of the aspiring CZTs who will enjoy the experience of a lifetime in just a few weeks. (That is not hyperbole, ask any CZT what they think of their training experience and at least once you’re bound to hear the word “magical”.)

As for the meaning of Annette’s tangle’s name, she writes “KIASOM (read backwards: Mosaik, german word for mosaic!).”

Kiasom is Annette’s second tangle on the site, her first was Neit-Lite. This is Annette’s monotangle tile featuring Kiasom.

It is easy to get a little confused when you reach Step 6 in Annette’s instructions. However if you look for this little fan shape shown as the white space below on the left, you can turn your tile and methodically fill in all the shapes having the same orientation.

Kiasom examples

It also helps in Steps 2 through 5 to see the elongated S shapes you are connecting rather than looking at them as individual ) and ( strokes — you’ll get smoother curves if you think of the S shape.

Annette illustrates the step-by-step instructions for drawing Kiasom here on her blog. For my main example of Kiasom I chose one of the variations Annette shows with her tangle.

I really like this tangle! It’s really fun to draw. It does take some focusing, but I did get it right away. I’ll be using this one on my tiles for sure.

  • This is a fun one! I love playing with all those curvy shapes. I tried all the variations you presented on your blog and enjoyed them all! Thanks for this one Annette. You’ll LOVE Seminar!!! One of the best experiences of my life. ???? My only advice: catch up on your sleep BEFORE you go!

  • Rhiannon

Great tangle, I’ll be trying it!

I love your pattern Kiasom, Annette. In fact I`m making about a dozen different varieties of it for my upcoming Exhibit in Montreal. I`m doing them individually and calling them “tiny originals”. It is such a fun pattern to do!
