How to draw ZOOLOO

It’s also a very good reminder about being conscious of making deliberate strokes in Zentangle®.

South African Judy Voges shares her tangle with us and it’s her first on the site. Judy is registered to become a CZT a little later in the year.

Her tangle is named Zooloo because as she “saw the emerging shapes they reminded me of the traditional fighting shields and spears of the Zulu tribe from KwaZulu Natal in South Africa.”

Traditional Zulu Shield and fighting spears. The Zulu shield is no longer used in battle and is now used for traditional Zulu ceremonies such as weddings and funerals.

Judy introduces herself,

I am a 2nd Grade teacher and have been teaching for the last 35 years!

I have always been interested in patterns in crafts etc and have been making cards for many years – I seem to go through phases and discovered Zentangles on the internet about a year or so ago. (my Latest batch of cards were very Zentangle inspired!)

I did a beginner workshop last year with a CZT and I am very excited to say that I am travelling to Providence in April to become a CZT myself. A huge adventure for me as it will be the first time travelling on my own and my first trip to the USA!

Zentangle pattern: Zooloo. Image © Linda Farmer and TanglePatteThere are a good many ways you can fill and shade the shapes in Zooloo and achieve different looks. This minimalist version on the right is very attractive to my eye. If you are methodical when doing the strokes to fill areas in a grid pattern, you never know what additional ways you might discover to vary the basic pattern.

Judy illustrates the step-by-step instructions for drawing Zooloo below and demonstrates it in a monotangle using part of the Zooloo motif as her string.

Happy Chinese New Year!

Chinese-New-Year-2016
Ring in the New Year! Today is the first day of the Chinese New Year, Year of the Monkey.

The New Year festival is centuries old and gains significance because of several myths and traditions. Traditionally, the festival was a time to honour deities as well as ancestors. Chinese New Year is celebrated in countries and territories with significant Chinese populations, including Mainland China, Hong Kong, Macau, Taiwan, Singapore, Thailand, Cambodia, Indonesia, Malaysia, Mauritius, and the Philippines. Chinese New Year is considered a major holiday for the Chinese and has had influence on the lunar new year celebrations of its geographic neighbours. ~ Wikipedia

According to The Telegraph, “The Chinese New Year party in London will be the biggest outside of Asia”. Here’s The Telegraph‘s guide on the traditional celebrations of the Chinese New Year and everything you need to know about the year of the Monkey. Check out the charts there to see what Chinese Zodiac sign you were born under.

Best wishes and good fortune to all our tangling friends celebrating this happy occasion.
