How to draw ECLIPSE

Zentangle pattern: Eclipse. Image © Linda Farmer and TanglePatterns.com. ALL RIGHTS RESERVED. You may use this image for your personal non-commercial reference only. The unauthorized reproduction or distribution (including pinning) of this copyrighted work is illegal. Lately I’ve been going through my pattern archives, as I do on a regular basis, and came across this cool Eclipse tangle from Indianapolis CZT Lara Williams.

Lara is one of the graduates of the very first CZT certification seminar in February 2009. Amazing that this is the 8th year of CZT training seminars and now there are well over 1,500 CZTs far and wide around the planet.

Eclipse was inspired by a fence Lara observed while “on a walk along the Canal in downtown Indy.

When setting up the steps for the tangle I first drew the circle in the middle followed by the crescent shapes on top which made me think of an eclipse and so I named it. ”

Eclipse has many options for fills and shading for interesting variations. I found if the circles in Step 1 weren’t large enough, I couldn’t get a nice overlap with the inner crescent stroke. Another way to get the circles the right size is to start with the largest inner crescents that meet in the middle (Step 4), then add the auras creating the other two crescents, and lastly add the circle. Work completely “backwards” in other words.

Lara shows a photo of the fence inspiring her tangle and illustrates the step-by-step instructions for drawing Eclipse here on her blog.

As you enjoy any of the tangles on the site, please do leave a comment of thanks and encouragement to show the artists you appreciate them for sharing their creativity for you to enjoy.

What a neat tangle – I shall try it out really soon! I particularly like the way, in your photo, you can see further away sections of that fence, almost like a “tangle within a tangle”! Thank you, Lara!

Thanks for the tangle. And I totally see where you got the name – it looks like those illustrations that show an eclipse from start to finish.

I also appreciate that this lead me to your blog, thanks!
