How to draw 8C

Zentangle pattern: 8C. Image © Linda Farmer and TanglePatterns.com. All rights reserved.Taiwan CZT Mina Hsiao’s elegant 8C tangle is all about the curves, eight of them to be precise.

8C is my new tangle. I created this tangle from eight curves.

In fact Mina’s curves in her steps looks almost “too perfect” to be hand drawn, so I had to ask.

When I draw 8C, I don’t use template to finish. I think tangle step must be clear, so I draw so slowly. I focus on each stroke. … It focus my attention and let me relax.

As much as I remind everyone that their strokes should be deliberate, Mina’s 8C shows what perfectly wonderful results are produced by taking your time. And the mental focus and relaxation we experience that is Zentangle® is the product of that deliberate stroke-making.

Tip: make sure your curves are nice and plump or they won’t intersect the way you want them to.

Here are Mina’s step-by-step instructions for drawing 8C.

If you use a dot grid for the underlying construction, the results are equally lovely. Here are two examples by Mina that also illustrate that there are many many ways to fill in the elements of this tangle and shade it for visually interesting results.
