How to draw FERDY

Zentangle pattern: Ferdy. Image © Linda Farmer and TanglePatterns.comWelcome to the first day of June, everyone!

Here in the Southeast we are only too familiar with this date as the beginning of the hurricane season. Please pray it’s a quiet one. Six months of prayers ought to do it.

Ferdy is a sweet and infinitely variable tangle pattern from Canadian CZT Bunny Wright. I absolutely love tangles that are just a couple of simple strokes, repeated. Elegant simplicity.

I call this tangle ‘Ferdy’ in honour of my dear husband Fred. He is so supportive of my tangling ‘addiction’ and often brings me my morning coffee because I’m up often before seven to draw and tangle. Secondly we will celebrate 50 years of wedded bliss this coming July, so ‘Ferdy’ it is!

I like this tangle. It’s easy to draw but almost impossible to draw without turning the tile, which is a good thing, right!? There are loads of variations for it as well.

It’s a little early, but many happy wishes for your 50th Anniversary Bunny and Fred! It’s a wonderful accomplishment you should both be very proud of.

Bunny & Fred Wright's 50th

Bunny is quite right, Ferdy is a tangle with lots of variations and it’s so easy to draw. It can be used as a border or ribbon pattern, or a random all-over one. The only thing to keep in mind is the angle of your first stroke. If you try to make it like a “regular” S, you won’t have the room to get the second S stroke right. It needs a good angle and it helps to keep the letter X in mind while making each stroke.

Bunny illustrates the step-by-step instructions for drawing Ferdy below. In addition to the variations she illustrates with the steps, Bunny’s three different tiles suggest several more ways you can embellish her tangle honoring her hubby and their life together.

LOVE the simplicity of Ferdy!! Thanks and congratulations Bunny!

  • Bunny,
This looks like so much fun to draw…will do so, soon as I send this note. Congratulations on your upcoming 50th celebration…mine is just around the corner, too. Doesn’t seem possible, does it?
    Great tangle!! Thanks.

Judith(Shamp), you are so right! I really can’t believe it’s been 50 years for us. We have been blessed also with three wonderful sons and five grandchildren and we are looking forward to a garden party at our son’s place to celebrate this July.

I absolutely LOVE this pattern. Ferdy is my newest tangle addiction!

    Bunny,
I love the openness of Ferdy. I spent a bunch of time trying out different variations in my sketchbook yesterday. And there are so many wonderful variations too.

Today I’m ready to try it. Maybe in the birthday card I’m doing for my Mom (she’s 94 today! 😀 ).

    Very nice. thanks

    Bunny,
I love this tangle, all of the variations, and the sentiment behind the tangle! Happy belated anniversary!!!!

  • Bunny, I’ve just come across this simple & pretty tangle because my students and I are working our way through an Alphabet Challenge! This was “Just F” week and one of the participants used Ferdy, which I hadn’t seen before, on her tile. A quick check of tanglepatterns.com brought me to this page and all your wonderful variations on such a simple theme. I love it! Thanks for sharing it. And happy upcoming 51st anniversary! 😉

  • Elizabeth Ruby-Cunningham
