How to draw OVY

Zentangle pattern: OvyTangler Adam Roades is the “deconstructor” of the Ovy tangle pattern and this is his first tangle pattern on the site.

Adam hails from northern Virginia, and here he introduces himself:

I’ve been tangling since November ’13, having stumbled across it online. I had been looking to relearn the sketching skills I’d lost since my teens but, as a father of four, I struggled to find enough time to devote to it.

I immediately loved the simplicity of Zentangle® and how quickly a beautiful work of art can emerge, line by line.

I also appreciate the focus and mindfulness it provides and I frequently use it during meetings to stay alert (at least awake). I’ve introduced quite a few of my colleagues to Zentangle as a way to encourage creativity and relaxation.

I created this tangle accidentally, starting with a double border and circles that reminded me of stepping stones in a creek. As I studied the end result, the letters ‘o,’ ‘v,’ and ‘y’ popped out, so I figured it named itself!

Ovy, which could be a relative of Milde Weiss’s Cabana, is a ribbon or border tangle with interesting possibilities. BTW, did you know that you can locate tangles by type on the site? Look in the left sidebar for the TANGLES BY TYPE heading, click on the type of tangle you’re interested in and Bingo! you’ll be presented with the links to all the tangles of that type.

Adam illustrates the step-by-step instructions for drawing Ovy below. Adam includes a cool monotangle Zentangle featuring Ovy and several variations to try and writes, “As you can see in my example, there are many ways to modify the basic pattern, though I’m sure the more-experienced tanglers will come up with even better variants!

VERY cool, Adam. Thanks for the share!

  • Adam, I commend you for re-visiting your past drawing life. I have met many people in the fast-paced business world who’s stories echo yours. I am pleased to hear that Zentangle found you and wish you much joy in sharing with your colleagues. BTW, your tangle is delightful and I will be teaching it tomorrow at the Jung Center in Houston. I hope that is OK with you.

I just tried this and it was fun and easy to do. Another great border tangle.

Love the pattern-thought the name might be a reference to Ovechkin since it is hockey time 🙂

  • Sue Zanker

Adam, I am very fond of “borderish” patterns and love to let them wander all over one another at will…..I am convinced they do their own thing at times, because often when I look back through my storage album, I don’t remember doing them!! This pattern of yours is so cool, I shall be using it for sure, so thanks for sharing…….and to our beloved Linda always, for tending this amazing site…..as tanglers, we are all indebted to her in one way or another, so three cheers Linda!

Adam thank you for Ovy. As soon as I saw your pattern It appealed to me. Thank you for sharing. Your monotangle looks great. It is interesting how the same pattern can be drawn in so many different ways to make a beautiful zentangle! And, of course, thank you Linda for giving us the opportunity to share and learn this fantastic art form. What would we do without you!

Adam, thanks for OVY, and I love all your variations. Will be including this on one of my works today! Thanks again!

  • Denise Lessels

Thank you Adam. This has become a new favourite for me. It has personality as a stand alone design and also incorporated into strings. I love it.

  • I’m honored (and I bit shocked!) to have my pattern featured on tanglepatterns! I’ve been following this site since I discovered Zentangle. Thank you all for your kind words! I’m very glad to have provided a new pattern for my fellow tanglers to enjoy!

  • Kim Condas

Adam, I think Ovy is lovely, and I know that work colleagues appreciate your sharing your love of Zentangle. Bet you’re an awesome dad, as well!!

  • Thanks for this tangle, Adam. I think I’ll use it alongside Cabana – both have that nice, “snake-like” appearance!

  • Melena

    Adam,
This pattern looks like so much fun. I love the reference of a stepping stone in the middle of a creek. It all flows so nicely. Thank you!

  • Larry Akers

Very nice Adam. It’s nice to see more men in the mix. I was beginning to think I was the only one. Lol. Your design is great! I can see the stepping stones and the water rushing by them. It gives me a feeling of peace and my mind races into the woods in my childhood. Thank you.

  • Sue Schneider

    Hi, Adam,
Cool tangle. This may well be one of the first I teach in a series I’m developing called “The Pen Men of Zen”, featuring tangles designed by men. I noticed that there are more than 20 masculine tanglers in Linda’s 2018 catalog of patterns. I especially like the way the orb seems suspended in a sling (step 4). Happy tangling. Sue

    • Adam Roades

@Larry, yes, we’re the few…the proud…the men of Zentangle! 😉 Your description of flowing water is exactly how I feel when I tangle this.

@Sue, thank you for the kind words! I’d be honored to have Ovy taught to other tanglers – I love “Pen Men of Zen”!
