How to draw B’TWINED

Zentangle pattern: B'TwinedB’Twined is today’s very cool tangle pattern and it’s from CZT Pegi Schargel of Portland, OR. This is her first tangle on the site.

Pegi says she named this B’Twinedbecause when creating it, it surprised me as I had no idea that the results would appear to ‘Be So Entwined’.

B’Twined is one of those 3D “over-under” tangles that are so visually interesting and it’s a super simple tangle to draw. Pegi writes,

As a teacher turned business woman with 4 other companies, I had been searching for a way to experience creative artistic satisfaction, yet hadn’t found ‘it’. I certainly had no formal art training, so I thought I had no artistic talent.  I began Zentangling after my husband David purchased Beckah’s Krahula’s “One Zentangle a Day” book as an unexpected gift. I didn’t have a clue what Zentangle was about so I worked my way through her book. I was hooked! Eureka!, I have found “It”! I laid the footwork for my newest business in 2013 and became Certified to teach shortly after that. I teach regularly scheduled classes at Do More Art in Portland, OR and Chehalis, WA and also instruct in multiple levels of Zentangle at a local community college. I have a near-daily Zentangle practice that keeps me sane and calm. My life has changed because of Zentangle. I love the sense of flow I attain while creating Zentangle art. Most of all I thrive on teaching it to others.

B’Twined is easy to draw yet looks complex. Only 2 strokes are used, straight-ish lines and parenthesis strokes, and it is complete in just a few steps.

B’Twined lends itself to great shading options with both pen and graphite as well as potential tangleations i.e. use a straight line instead of the parenthesis stroke for a nice latticework pattern, use a single row for a tile border, etc. I’ve even filled circles with it.

For my example of B’Twined I got out a pen I haven’t used in quite a while, my Sakura Pigma Graphic 1. I forgot how “wet” the Graphic 1 ink goes on. You have to be very careful of smudging before it dries and also the tip is a little soft. So it’s not great for getting into tight corners but perfect for large solid areas.

Pegi illustrates the step-by-step instructions for drawing B’Twined here on her blog. The blog image is a little blurry but if you click on it, a much larger clear image appears for you to download for your personal reference.

Pegi’s tips for drawing B’Twined:

  1. Step 2’s parenthesis need to be placed close to the diagonal line so that step 4 fits and connects properly.
  2. When doing step 4, I think of making the parenthesis strokes in a ‘Hollibaugh’ fashion – by ‘drawing behind’.
  3. I sometimes use only right ) parenthesis strokes and turn my tile to begin each new iteration of parentheses. My results tend to end up more even that way, but then I am a lefty.
