How to draw FRACAS

Zentanlge pattern: FracasFracas is one of the original “102” Zentangle®-original tangles and until now its drawing instructions have not been published online.

But with the recent introduction of Bijou to the Zentangle family and Bijou’s video including Indy-Rella, we can now add Fracas to our online library of tangles.

Fracas begins with the same central “crossing strokes” that establish the basis for Drupe and other similar tangles. Just for fun I added a little sparkle to my example here. Shading adds that great puffy effect to the finished Fracas.

In the following whimsical and creative 4-minute video, Bijou demonstrates “in person” how to draw the official tangles Meer (1:00), Zinger (1:34), Indy-Rella (2:10) and Fracas (2:41).

We are also introduced to several Bijou-isms in the video that serve as light-hearted reminders of important aspects of the Zentangle Method. The Bijou-isms can also be found on Bijou’s section of the Zentangle website.

UPDATE December 9, 2018 – Project Pack #04. As part of the Twelve Days of Zentangle, 2018 Edition series, in this Day 7 video starting at 04:09 Rick demonstrates how to tangle Fracas.

  6. "A Zentangle has no up or down and is not a picture of something, so you have no worries about whether you can draw a hand, or a duck. You always succeed in creating a Zentangle." Thus patterns that are drawings of a recognizable naturalistic or actual object, figure, or scene, are not tangles. A pattern is not always a tangle — here's what makes a tangle. TIP: tangles never start with pencil planning.
