How to draw A-FOG

Zentangle pattern: A-fogA-fog is a cool 3D tangle pattern from CZT Kathy Redmond of Praireville, Louisiana, and it’s her first on the site.

A-fog came about last summer when Kathy was undergoing some health issues and was awaiting the results of a biopsy, which thankfully came back later with good results.

At the time, writes Kathy, she couldn’t “seem to concentrate or retain information very well” and she felt like her brain was in a fog. She pulled out the “portable Zentangle kit” she keeps in a portable hard drive case, and began to draw Helen Williams’ Leaflet tangle.

But as sometimes happens when you think you’re following pattern instructions, you go off track. “I realized pretty quickly things were not progressing as they should, but in true Zentangle® style, I just kept going.” And A-fog is the result.

A-fog is formed on an ogee grid with a fill of the official tangle Betweed-like alternating strokes in the shapes formed by the grid. To get the column effect, apply shading along the vertical lines of the pattern’s first step.

Kathy illustrates the step-by-step instructions for drawing A-fog here on her blog and shares the full story behind her cool tangle. (Note: click on the steps image to download the larger size.)

BTW, if you’d like to see some lovely Betweed examples and variations check out Maria’s beautiful “field notes” book here.

  • Just a heads up, LInda…. the link you have provided to the portable hard drive case is for a 2.5″ drive… and our 3.5″ tiles will NOT fit in it. Hard drives have been getting smaller and smaller, and the cases that fit the Zentangle tiles were for the old ones which are larger. In general, these are getting MUCH harder to find. It would be a shame for someone to order one and find out it’s pretty useless for tiles. Cases should be at least 3.75″ wide inside the case for these to fit.

Thanks so much Sadelle, appreciate the heads up. I’ve updated the link to the larger size and if tanglers are shopping elsewhere they should be aware of the size difference too – take your tiles with you and make sure they fit.

  • I’m so excited to have a tangle published on your site, Linda! I feel like I have ARRIVED. Thanks and I hope everyone enjoys my little oops.
